Dow and St. Bernard Project to Teach Veterans Marketable Building Skills
Collaboration will Help Get Hurricane Victims Back in Home for the First Time Since 2005
MIDLAND, Mich. – Nov. 8, 2012 – With many veterans struggling to find work in the U.S., The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:Dow) and non-profit St. Bernard Project (SBP) will collaborate on a Dow Sustainability Corps project to teach a new skill-set to veterans who are part of SBP’s “Good Work Good Pay” program. Participation in the training program will provide veterans the unique opportunity to learn marketable skills while giving SBP a consistent, trained workforce to rebuild homes affected by hurricanes Katrina and Isaac. This project allows Dow to broaden its effort to connect with veterans and assist with their transition to the civilian workforce while leaving a lasting positive legacy in the form of high performing energy efficient homes.
In commemoration of Veteran’s Day, on Monday, Nov. 12, Dow technical experts will train SBP’s veterans how to install Dow Building Solutions’ energy efficient FROTH-PAKä Foam Insulation. FROTH-PAK insulation is a two-component, quick-cure polyurethane foam that provides a sustainable insulation and air-sealing solution to homes affected by hurricane disasters, due to its portable format and high insulating value. Veterans will learn how to install this energy-efficient foam insulation during a morning session that will be executed during a hands-on afternoon training at the home of Sande Grantz, a victim of contractor fraud after Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on her home in New Orleans, La. In 2007, Sande and her husband tried to rebuild on their own but during the process, her husband suffered a fatal heart attack. Since then, Sande has had to live in a trailer near her home.
