April 9, 2013 – Join hundreds of mayors across the country in celebrating national service!

On April 9, more than 800 mayors, who collectively represent nearly 100 million Americans in all 50 states, joined together for the first-ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service to recognize the impact of national service participants in AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs in their communities.

“It is a testament to the effectiveness of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs that nearly one-third of Americans will have their mayor participating in this first-ever Day of Recognition,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of CNCS. “We’re proud to stand with this bipartisan group of mayors. These leaders are shining a bright light on the many ways AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers are improving neighborhoods and transforming lives across the country.”

As the federal agency for service and volunteering, CNCS annually engages more than five million citizens in service at more than 70,000 locations in 8,500 cities across the country through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and other programs.

Participating mayors enjoyed site visits, roundtables, proclamations, and celebrations. All events are designed to highlight how national service works for cities and focuses on three groups that benefit from the program: the recipients of service, the people who serve, and the larger community and nation.

The St. Bernard Project invites you to join us in celebrating a week dedicated to strong women committed to helping New Orleans families move back home. This Memorial Day week, hundreds of women from all over the United States are coming to New Orleans united behind one cause: to work hard, play hard — and to continue to rebuild New Orleans.

SBP has rebuilt 470 homes in the last seven years for families who’ve struggled since Katrina destroyed their homes. We’re talking about hard working families who did everything right – they saved their money and realized the American dream of homeownership.

Today, there are over 100 families on SBP’s waiting list. Each family is waiting for the $25,000 in funding needed to buy the supplies and materials to begin construction – a rebuilding process powered by over 10,000 volunteers each years.

While each day of Women’s Rebuild Week is focused on rebuilding, each night of Women’s Rebuild Week features events that showcase the best of NOLA food, music, mystery and most importantly – what it means to be home.

Volunteer shifts are available NOW! Sign up for a day, two days, a week – whatever you can spare. You can click here to register. And click here for updates of after-hours activities.

March 9 – 17, 2013 AmeriCorps Week

Each year during AmeriCorps Week, we recognize the commitment of AmeriCorps members and alums by highlighting the extraordinary impact AmeriCorps makes across our nation every day. AmeriCorps Week is a time to salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their service, thank AmeriCorps community partners, and communicate AmeriCorps impact on communities and on the lives of those who serve.

Each day of AmeriCorps Week, SBP will spotlight a different one of our AmeriCorps members on our Facebook page so you can learn more about the passionate individuals we have on our team and what drives them to devote themselves full time to meeting the needs of disaster impacted citizens.

AmeriCorps has been an integral partner of St. Bernard Project since our inception. In 2006, SBP was assigned its first team of NCCC members and since that time we have had over 800 members (and counting) serve at SBP through all three branches of AmeriCorps: AmeriCorps NCCC, AmeriCorps State and AmeriCorps VISTA.

SBP is proud to operate a national AmeriCorps Program with members returning disaster survivors to their homes in Greater New Orleans, Joplin, Missouri, and most recently New York while on disaster deployment. SBP’s AmeriCorps members are driven, passionate people who come to serve each day with a true sense of urgency for our mission and a deep love for the culture and traditions of the communities we serve. We look forward to being able to introduce you to some of these dedicated individuals who are serving each day to get our clients home.

Learn more about how you can become a part of the movement to make disaster recovery as efficient as possible by joining SBP’s AmeriCorps Program.

More details about SBP’s work in New York and New Jersey is forthcoming. Please stay tuned!

—

In response to the Presidential call to service in honor of Martin Luther King Day, St. Bernard Project will host a three-day disaster recovery weekend in New York City and Long Island, NY to help those affected by Superstorm Sandy; and a series of 24-hour builds in Joplin, MO, and New Orleans. Volunteers will work on houses from Saturday, January 19 through Monday, January 21, 2013.

For the MLK Day of Service, SBP is proud to partner with AmeriCorps, MTV, IAVA, Team Rubicon, UPS, Toyota, Dow, DaCheng Law Offices, Allstate Foundation, EILEEN FISHER, and Entergy.

Make a day off a day on. Help our clients move home when home matters most. Check out what activities we have planned in your region and register below.

New Orleans
Seven years after Hurricane Katrina, SBP continues to rebuild homes for homeowners who did everything right, but cannot get back on their feet without your help. Be the difference between a homeowner living in a gutted home or trailer, and living in the comforts of the home they owned before Katrina. Volunteer opportunities are available on Saturday from 8-5. On Sunday, SBP will kickoff a 24-hour build at 5PM! The graveyard shift has never been so rewarding.

Joplin
SBP’s first affiliate is Rebuild Joplin, an organization dedicating to rebuilding the city that lost 7,000 homes to the May 22, 2011 tornado. Support Rebuild Joplin’s efforts by volunteering during a 24-hour build starting at 12:01AM Monday!

New York
SBP’s mission is to ensure disaster-impacted communities have a providing prompt, efficient and predictable path to recovery. Superstorm Sandy’s impact on the New York region is significant and the situation is dire. SBP believes that community is not defined by proximity, so we are launching our first volunteer opportunity in honor of Martin Luther King on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (January 19-21)! The scope of work includes gutting, mucking and mold remediation. Sign up to volunteer in one of three locations:

The Rockaways – Meet at 7:30AM (location TBD). From there, you will be dispatched to muck/gut a home in the Rockaways or Sheepshead Bay. Capacity – 75 people per day

Staten Island – Our partner, Tunnel 2 Towers, will host SBP volunteers throughout the weekend.
