Rebuilding the Homes and Lives of Katrina Survivors

AmeriCorps

Bring disaster-impacted families back home. Become a part of St. Bernard Project.

AmeriCorps Site Supervisor paintingSt. Bernard Project is building a movement to revolutionize disaster recovery in America and create solutions for families in need of safe, affordable housing.  To achieve this goal, St. Bernard Project is seeking passionate leaders from across the country to join our work. St. Bernard Project recruits exceptional college graduates, talented professionals and dedicated retirees who are ready to commit themselves to 10 months of service that will meet the needs of American citizens impacted by disasters.

Why join
As a member of St. Bernard Project you will become a part of the growing national service movement, as well as get the opportunity to develop valuable professional skills with a dynamic organization that is pioneering a new model for disaster recovery. AmeriCorps members serve in virtually all facets of SBP’s operation, so you have the opportunity to gain a variety of skill sets according to your professional goals.

St. Bernard Project is a nationally-recognized leader in post-disaster recovery and is an ever-evolving organization that is poised to become a national model for disaster recovery.  Recently we formed the River Parishes joint-alliance with the United Way of St. John, New Orleans Habitat for Humanity, and the Beacon of Hope Resource Center.

Recovery To Date
To date, St. Bernard Project has rebuilt 450+ homes in the Greater New Orleans area due in large part to the 48,000+ volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy to restoring our community.

Operating as Rebuild Joplin, SBP is working diligently in Joplin, MO, where an estimated 7,500 homes were damaged by the EF5 tornado that hit in May 2011. With 4,000 of these homes located in the area defined as catastrophic by FEMA, the need for an efficient strategy to rebuild is imperative. Thankfully, St. Bernard Project is poised to help address the housing crisis in the communities in which it operates and create solutions to make affordable housing truly affordable.

Our Volunteers
St. Bernard Project seeks individuals from all backgrounds and life experiences who have what it takes to develop innovative solutions that bring families back home in communities still struggling to recover from natural disasters. While there is no “ideal” St. Bernard Project team member, we believe the following traits are common amongst our members –

AC Site Supervisor at left with homeowner and AC Client Services Coordinator at rightproblem solving, strong leadership, drive, flexibility, and positivity. St. Bernard Project is currently hiring for the following positions:

-          Site Supervisor
-          Assistant Electrician
-          Assistant Plumber
-          Assistant Carpenter
-          Supply Logistics Coordinator
-          Client Services Coordinator
-          Volunteer Coordinator

Because the Corporation for National and Community Service deepened its support of our work and model by doubling the size of our AmeriCorps Program, we are continuing  to extend the reach of our program in the Greater New Orleans region and Joplin, Missouri. It’s a thrilling time to be a part of SBP as we transition into becoming a new model for disaster recovery nationwide.

AmeriCorps continues to be an integral partner to the success of SBP. Our AmeriCorps members are passionate, driven individuals whose commitment to service has been directly responsible for restoring the homes and lives of over 450 families in disaster-impacted communities. St Bernard Project is now positioned to produce similar results for those  in need in Joplin.
