Mission

The St. Bernard Project removes barriers for families who wish to move back to their homes in St. Bernard Parish.  The problems we face are easily solved: all we need are funding and volunteers.  We run a Support-A-Family program that provides volunteer labor and building supplies, as well as a Tool Co-Op and Community Center.

History

The St. Bernard Project was started in March 2006 by four volunteers who went to St. Bernard Parish to do relief work.  During our initial month of service, we met residents who were courageous, spirited and determined to rebuild their lives and community.  They shared their stories, opened their homes and made us laugh.

Inspired by their collective spirit, openness and desire to rebuild their lives and community, we decided to create an organization that would provide vital resources and support to families in a seamless and timely manner.  The St. Bernard Project’s programs and goals are directly driven by the needs expressed by the community members.

STAFF AND LONG TERM VOLUNTEERS OF
ST. BERNARD PROJECT

lizzy.jpg

Liz McCartney, Director and Co-Founder

Liz worked for a community-based nonprofit organization in Washington, DC for the past four years.  Prior to that she taught ESL and middle school for over five years. Liz is a graduate of Boston College and recently received a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction from George Washington University. In her free time she likes to play soccer and scrabble, travel, and eat blue crabs with lots of Old Bay seasoning.

Zack Rosenburg, Director and Co-Founder

Zack has been a criminal defense attorney in Washington, DC for the past three years.  Prior to his defense work, he founded Linking Communities for Educational Success (LINK), a non-profit organization that provides tutoring, mentoring and after school education and enrichment services to at-risk junior high school students in Washington, DC.  Before law school he was the development director of Families Foreward, a low-income housing and job training program in Washington, DC.

AboutUs-Christina.JPG

Christina Wheeler, Construction Manager

Christina grew up in upstate New York and then moved to Boston to go to Tufts University. After graduating with a civil engineering degree, she took a job in the Boston area as a field engineer. She spent three years on construction sites before she quit her job, packed up her stuff, and headed on a road trip across the country with her boyfriend, Dave. The trip led them to Louisiana in Novemeber 2006 and they've been here ever since. She currently lives in a FEMA trailer, but hopes to eventually buy a house and fix it up with all the skills she's learned at the St. Bernard Project.

PAULBALDWIN.jpg

Paul Baldwin, Construction Manager, AmeriCorps*State
paul.baldwin@stbernardproject.org

Paul Baldwin was formerly very interested in providing a bio but has not done so. Thus, this is a fabricated essay. Paul was suspected born in the small Belarussian town of Odva, a large-ish commodities market in Eastern Europe. Raised a poor fishmonger, Paul eventually came to the United States in search of freedom, the chupacabra, stamps, hope, and satsumas. This, of course, led him to SBP where (and here the truth begins) he is an invaluble member of the staff.

Mikebiopic.jpg

Mike Bauman, Construction Site Supervisor, AmeriCorps*State
michael.bauman@stbernardproject.org

Michael is originally from St. Louis, MO. He was a national champion rollerskater in 1970. He has been travelling the world, leaving his mosic-art mark all over, including in South Africa. It was here where he saw the Katrina feature on Oprah that included the St. Bernard Project, and then he relocated to da Parish. To see his artwork, visit mosaicmanworld.com. In the world outside the project, Mike is an AIDS activist.

andrea.JPG

Andrea Bean, Director of Volunteers, AmeriCorps*Vista
andrea@stbernardproject.org

Originally from western PA and a graduate of Westminster College, Andrea is on her 5th stint to Louisiana since Katrina.  During her third trip in April 2007, Andrea felt led to leave her Colorado life and return to da Parish on a more permanent basis.  Things came together and she joined the team at the St. Bernard Project in September 2007.  Andrea spent the past five years in Fort Collins, CO, loving the mountainous beauty of the Rockies and working as the Special Programs Manager with Habitat for Humanity.

AboutUs-Bob.JPG

Bob Buras, Community Liaison

Born and raised in the 9th Ward, Bob moved to St. Bernard in 1965 and intends to stay here until the water flushes him out into the gulf.  Working with the St. Bernard Project, he's met some great people and is excited about building into the future.

AboutUs-Paul.JPG

Paul Clark, Construction Site Supervisor, AmeriCorps*State
paul.clark@stbernardproject.org

Paul, 24, graduated in 2005 from St. Louis University with a B.A. in Political Science and Spanish, then traveled to India where he volunteered at a leprosy clinic (don't worry folks, he's clean!).  He's been working with the St. Bernard Project since March 2007 and has aspirations for the Peace Corps and, eventually, minor seminary.  In his spare time, he likes taking unsuspecting volunteers to Willie D's Frozen Custard and traveling to Frenchman Street for some good jazz.

Christine.jpg

Christine Graham, Construction Site Supervisor

Christine visited the New Orleans area for the first time in the spring of 2007. After handing doors for a day with the St. Bernard Project and satiating herself with great music and fried food at the Jazz Fest, Christine was hooked. She left the genetic research lab where she had been working as a technician for 4 years, and she and her husband put everything that wouldn't fit in our car in storage. They're here until next summer (at least), and they couldn't be happier!

MrSusan.jpg

Colleen Kenny, Office Logistics, AmeriCorps*State
colleen@stbernardproject.org
Colleen is 24 and from Frankfort, IL--Chicago-ish. She went to school at Duquesne University in the deceptively fastastic city of Pittsburgh, or the Grand Shiny, as it is known. SBP discovered Colleen's raw talent and pervasive sense of self while she was their minion during her stint in AmeriCorps NCCC, the exact same team as Anna "Bananas" Ziegler. When not fighting entropy in the office and in the world in general, Colleen rejoices at her new reunion with her life long love Television, is newly addicted to Top Chef, anxiously awaits Battlestar Galactica marathons (the new one), and loves the sight of oil refineries, especially at night.

emily1.jpg

Emily Lancaster, Volunteer Coordinator, AmeriCorps*State
emily.lancaster@stbernardproject.org

This is my life in 150 words or less. I moved to New Orleans to begin my journey of life. If you have more questions about my life- ask Colleen, she has my real bio memorized in her mind. This bio is dedicated to my father to prove that I really do work here. Hey Mom and Dad!

larryliebowitzpicture.jpg

Larry Liebowitz, Construction Site Supervisor
larry.liebowitz@stbernardproject.org

Larry is 23, from Baltimore, and doesn't mind speaking about himself in the third person for a inter-web-page bio. He has traveled the country as a truck driver, and he lived on a kibbutz for a year. He has curly hair and enjoys Settlers of Cataan.

momintent.jpg

Marion has worked in the health care profession for over 30 years -- mostly as a nurse-midwife -- until her retirement in November 2005. Most recently, she served as the Director of Professional Services for the American College of Nurse-Midwives.  Before that Marion was a partner (and founder) at the Birth Center in Bethesda, Maryland. She currently serves on the Board of the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing. In her free time, Marion enjoys reading, studying Italian and spoiling her grandchildren.

Perridot.jpg

Peridot Rodgers-Liston, Construction Site Supervisor
peridot.rodgers-liston@stbernardproject.org

Peridot came to us from AmeriCorps NCCC, from where she graduated in November 2007. After she left AmeriCorps, she decided to come back down to St. Bernard Parish after spending 6 weeks here working at camp hope. She fell in love with the old Camp Hope and the Parish, so she is here as a long term volunteer for a year or so. Peridot graduated high school in June 2006 and is 19 years old.

joe.JPG

Joe Urbeso, Office Logistics, AmerCorps*State
joe.urbeso@stbernardproject.org

Joe was one of our clients before he came on staff long term as an AmerCorps*Direct volunteer. St. Bernard Project finished his house, and since then, he has been invaluably helping us run the office. Joe is a single father of two: Leslie, a freshman in high school, and Joe, Jr., in middle school. Both his children are competitive karate fighters, and he shares his love of RC racing with his family.

Annabananas.jpg

Anna Ziegler, Supply Runner, AmeriCorps*State
anna.ziegler@stbernardproject.org

Anna "Susan-Towelmaker-Bananas" Ziegler hails from Tunkhannok, PA (also known as Tutenkamen, PA). She graduated with a studio art degree from Bloomsburg University in December 2006. She is 22 (will be 23 in January 2008) and has an interest in glass blowing. Anna came to the St. Bernard Project as a Corps Member in NCCC from the Sacramento campus. She fell in love with the Parish when her team was placed here in the summer of '07 for 4 1/2 months. She just had to come back for a rather undetermined amount of time. Anna is our runner extraordinaire currently, and after she is done training the new Americorps teams in this particular art, she will have a new position within the Project.
