Week of April 7-11

When asked, David will tell you the one thing he’s looking forward to doing the most in his new house is cooking for his family on a real gas stove.  A native of Louisiana born and raised in the lower ninth ward, David and his wife Charlene have been residents of St Bernard Parish for 27 years.  Before the storm, David, who is disabled, stayed at home and took care of the house while his wife worked.  Two days before the storm hit, the Huerstels, along with their youngest daughter Shannon, their grandchild Conner, and David’s mother-in-law packed their bags and moved to a hotel in New Orleans about six blocks away from the Superdome.  The family was not able to leave the state due to his mother-in-law’s recent knee surgery and her inability to sit in a car for an extended amount of time.  After three days of weathering the storm in New Orleans, the Huerstels decided to go to Memphis where they stayed several months.  After that long time in Memphis, the Huerstels were finally able to return to their home and move into a trailer, where they still live today.  David is excited to see the continuing work on his house and hopes to move in soon with the newest edition to the family, a year and half old Labrador retriever named Buddy Bo Dynamite, the first dog David has ever owned.
