Chastity
Taveras is a survivor. St Bernard Project is working on the house that Chastity was raised in her whole
life. She and her mother had just moved back into their home two weeks before the storm, after an abusive
husband had set fire to the house, causing major structural damage. When news of the storm reached her,
Chastity, and six members of her family, including her three children, Frankie, and twins, Preston and Payton, evacuated to
Baton Rouge where they stayed in a hotel for several days until the storm passed. After leaving the hotel,
her family moved into a battered women’s shelter where Chastity met her current husband of almost two years.
After the storm, Chastity returned to school, received her EMT license
and began working for an Ambulance company in Mississippi, where she now lives with her husband and children.
Chastity longs for the day when she will be able to return to the Parish and regain the sense of community she misses.
She is a domestic violence and Hurricane Katrina survivor.
