Rebuilding Program: 262 Completed, 50 Under Construction

The St. Bernard Project’s Rebuilding Program rebuilds homes for senior citizens, people with disabilities and families with children who can not afford to have their homes rebuilt by contractors. For clients who can afford supplies, the St. Bernard Project provides supervised volunteer labor. For clients who can not afford supplies, the St. Bernard Project buys the supplies and provides the labor.

A typical rebuild project takes approximately 12 weeks and costs approximately $15,000 worth of building supplies to complete. Specifically, during the rebuilding process SBP:

  • Assigns a skilled construction manager to oversee all phases of rebuilding.
  • Purchases and delivers all building materials necessary to rebuild the client’s home.
  • Places a skilled site supervisor in each client’s home to supervise the volunteers and serve as the direct point of contact for each client.
  • Assigns a staff member (often a former client) to check in regularly with client during the rebuilding process.

Volunteers play a vital role in the Rebuilding Program. Every day between 100 and 250 volunteers are in the field working on clients’ homes. Volunteers not only help build clients’ homes but they also provide our clients with support and encouragement during the emotional rebuilding process. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, check out our Volunteer page.

Take a moment to read about some of the families that the Rebuilding Program has supported. To date volunteers from the St. Bernard Project have worked on 262 projects:

  • 262 completed projects: these families are living in their homes again
  • 50 current projects: these homes are under construction and families will be able to move home in the coming weeks

Please support our rebuilding program – either by choosing to support the rebuilding costs of a specific family’s home, or by providing funds for our rebuilding pool, by visiting our Donate Now page and making a donation today. If you choose, 100% of your donation will go directly to the family you select.
