The Bienemy family has been approved for the Rebuilding Program, but SBP does not have sufficient funds to begin work on their home. Read their story and Donate Now to get them home!

For Tyson Bienemy, moving back into his mother’s home is a necessary step towards healing.

Tyson, 33, worked as a dump-truck driver before the storm and lived with his wife Deneen, and his younger brother Ventrel, 19. Tyson and Ventrel’s mother passed from breast cancer in 1997, and Tyson and Deneen had raised Ventrel since he was eight years old.

Before the storm, Tyson and his family evacuated to Natchitoches, La., where they stayed in a shelter for three weeks, then moved into a hotel for two months.

Tyson and Deneen first returned to the Parish in January 2006. They were not prepared for what they saw.

“It was impossible to explain,” said Tyson,” I just asked myself where would we go, what would we do, I knew I would have to start my life over again.”

Tyson managed to salvage a few personal possessions and returned to Baton Rouge, where they had been living in a hotel for two months.

Tyson eventually moved back to the Parish, rented a home and began working for the trucking company he worked with before the storm. Ventrell started school at Nunez Community College and was doing well.

Although Tyson received insurance money, he used it to pay off the mortgage on his mother’s home, leaving him with nothing to rebuild.

In September 2008, Tyson and Deneen faced a new tragedy. While visiting a friend after school, Ventrell was shot and killed--a victim of an argument he had nothing to do with.

Tyson was devastated after losing Ventrell, and he wanted more than ever to put his home back together.

“When my mother closed on this home, she told me she bought it so I could always call it home,” Ventrell said. “I want to make it home again.”

With the St. Bernard Project’s help, Tyson will soon get that wish.
