Homeowner Bio

When talking to Roosevelt Houston it’s always a good idea to be up-to-date on the most recent Saints action. He is an avid fan of the New Orleans pro football team.

Other than football he is generally a man of few words who has lived his whole life in New Orleans. The house he owns was built in 1984 by his grandfather whom he later purchased the home from. While he generally doesn’t expound upon his feelings verbally, he is always visibly excited when volunteers are working on his home. He is especially excited now to see progress being made on his home after living in a FEMA trailer next to his house for more than four years.

Mr. Houston and his wife Agnes have been surviving mostly off of his disability income since 1966 when he was injured. Now his three sons, 30, 25 and 22, all live in Missouri. During a recent visit to see her sons and grandchildren, Agnes was injured in a fall, and was hospitalized many miles away from her husband and her home. Once she is well enough to leave, and the house is rebuilt, she and Roosevelt will be reunited in their home.

During the storm, Mr. Houston stayed in New Orleans and weathered the storm with his sister who lives next door. It is an experience he is even less talkative about and one he feels lucky to have survived. While his sister plants to move to Florida and many of his relatives, including his children in Missouri, have urged him to move away, Mr. Houston has no desire to leave the city that has been home his entire life and the house that has been in home to his family for 26 years.
