Rebuilding the Homes and Lives of Katrina Survivors

Support SBP’s Efforts to Help Soldiers and Veterans Find their Next Mission

Help SBP support and expand our veterans initiatives!

SBP runs a pair of pioneering programs focused on engaging veterans in stable employment and meaningful service. The Good Work Good Pay Program (GWGP) uses a trained workforce to rebuild affordable homes and to stabilize blighted, vacant and disaster-impacted communities. GWGP provides veterans with marketable skills and stable employment through a job training program and helps SBP address unmet affordable housing needs in New Orleans. SBP has also implemented a Veterans Corps (VetCorps) program to engage veterans in meaningful service. Veterans serve for 10 months as part of SBP’s AmeriCorps team, developing marketable construction skills and serving in every phase of construction at SBP.

More details on these programs are available on our Veterans Initiatives page. Please read the Times-Picayune’s coverage of our programs and moving bios of several of our veterans for more information, and you can also check out the PSA that Spike TV made featuring SBP’s Electrical Apprentice Andre Allen!

Help SBP support and expand our veterans initiatives.

1. Sponsor a VetCorps Member.

In partnership with several military programs, SBP can fund one VetCorps member for 10 months of service for only $5,000. While boosting SBP’s capacity to bring families home, your donation will provide a veteran with another opportunity to serve his or her community and the chance to learn marketable jobs skills. You can also make a smaller donation to SBP and designate that it is meant as partial funding for a VetCorps member.

2. Sponsor a house or building supplies.

Using volunteers and donations, SBP can build a home in 8-12 weeks for as little as $15,000 to $20,000. Make a difference for one of the 130 families on our waiting list by sponsoring a home or building supplies and help bring them home.

To sponsor a house for $20,000, please contact Ann Williams at 504-277-6831 or ann.williams@stbernardproject.org.

3. Volunteer with VetCorps.

Volunteers drive SBP rebuilding projects and have been critical to SBP’s completion of more than 410 homes since 2006. Volunteer for a day alongside VetCorps members, or even consider committing 10 months to further our mission and serve your community as a VetCorps member.

For more information on volunteering with SBP, see our volunteer information page or register in our online system if you already know your preferred volunteer dates.

4. Host a fundraiser, such as a house party or one of our many other fundraiser ideas.

Get your friends, family, coworkers and community involved in supporting former members of the military at SBP by hosting a fundraiser at your home or work. There are many different ways to help raise money, and you can have a major effect–the number one reason people don’t give to charity is because they are not asked to do so. Spread the word and give your community a great opportunity to give back to veterans!

Check out the ideas and resources we have available on our fundraising pages, or contact Ann Williams at ann.williams@stbernardproject.org to be matched with a member of the SBP team.
